You can search for a topic, keyword,
author or title. |
|
If searching for an author, type surname first
and do not separate the names with a comma. Search for
luhrmann baz or shakespeare william.
|
|
If you are looking for the title of a text
that begins with the, a, or an, do not include this in
your search. Search for tempest not the tempest;
or joy luck club, not the joy luck club.
|
|
You can browse through lists of resources arranged
by HSC subject area or topic by selecting
the 'Browse' options.

Use a ? to replace a letter within a word.
A search for wom?n will retrieve items containing
the word woman and women.
Use an * at the end of a word to retrieve variations of that
word. A search for child* will retrieve items containing the words
child or children or childhood, etc.
The boolean operators, and, or, and not,
function in the usual manner. A search for women and law will retrieve items
containing both words. A search for women or law will retrieve items containing
either word, but not necessarily both. A search for women not law will retrieve
items containing the word women, but not the word law.
A comma inserted between words will work like the or operator.
A search for white, patrick will retrieve not only items on Patrick White,
but other items containing the words patrick or white, such as items about St. Patrick
or white paint.
Infocus uses SCIS (Schools Catalogue Information Service) Subject Headings List
(5th Edition) as a starting point to describe its resources. These appear under the heading "topics covered"
on the search results, browse and resource description pages.
Words and phrases that are not SCIS headings but that are commonly used
by HSC students are included in "topics covered", for example "Area of
Study" and "Change". The full list of Infocus topics (SCIS Subject
headings) can be viewed through the Browse option.
